School District Wants $35,045 To Printout Public Information

South Carolina school districts have been asked to disclose how much money has been spent on various functions performed throughout the year, including:Greenville County Schools logo

  • catered meals,
  • conference & seminar fees,
  • education & training services (state & non-state),
  • employee travel (in & out of state),
  • management & consultant services,
  • non-employee travel, and
  • correspondence on requests for students to bring supplies (or money to buy supplies), school trips, or any other school-related needs.

The think tank SC Policy Council has requested these items under the Freedom of Information Act.

Currently listed as the 51st largest in the nation, Greenville County’s School District has determined that the cost to digg up and disseminate that information will be quite expensive, but at least it wasn’t as much as Beaufort County wants.
Greenville County charges for SCPC's FOIA requestWhat do you think about the County charging .15 per page for the cost of printing out information - information that we should have free access to already?

ALA, EPA Show South Carolina Air Is Getting Dirtier

Particulate matter is the term for solid or liquid particles found in the air. Some particles are large or dark enough to be seen as soot or smoke. Others are so small they can be detected only with an electron microscope. - EPA

In the latest EPA Particle Pollution Report, South Carolina is one of nine states showing an increase of annual particulate matter concentrations in the air we breathe.

That means breathing is getting harder for you, me and all the members of these groups at risk:

  • Adult or Pediatric Asthma
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • CV Disease
  • Diabetes, and
  • Emphysema

The latest American Lung Association Particle Pollution Report gives Greenville County a failing grade. The American Lung Association's logo Spartanburg, Richland, and Charleston counties here in South Carolina also received an ‘F’.

Stay tuned for air pollution numbers once Santee Cooper’s coal-fired plant comes online.
