Black Bears Among Us
Besides the more common cat, dog, or fish tank, some people have pet guinea pigs, rabbits, or raccoons. And some have bears.
Before you go hanging sardine cans in the woods behind your house for your own pet bear, remember: it’s illegal to have a black bear in South Carolina in captivity without a permit!
Any captive bear, even if only temporarily, needs to be permitted.
Now that urban growth is so widespread across sections of the state, commingling with bears has become a big problem - so big that SCDNR has released a short video on our bear activity. Included are some important tips for SC hikers or anybody else that sees a wild bear, along with mapped locations of common bear sightings around the state.
Activity last 120 Days
