Lower Upstate Water Levels Mean More Fires

Upstate residents have done a good job of cutting back on water usage since the voluntary request was issued,SC State map of counties in a drought status in '08 but the SC Drought Response Committee says more steps need to be taken now to avoid a true crisis later:

  1. Water systems, businesses and individuals in the extreme drought counties should implement aggressive conservation measures,
  2. Water systems need to immediately contact the DHEC and DNR if they anticipate water supply problems, and
  3. Water systems should notify the DNR Drought Information Center regarding the success of their conservation actions.

Although not close to California’s scale, because of the drought we’re in right now, South Carolina’s lack of water has increased fires 19.5% over our 5 year average.

Greenville Sites On The EPA Cleanup List

With news that the EPA may sue the PentagonEPA cleanup sites around Greenville, SC over their slack pollution controls, it seemed like a good time to see how we fare here in Greenville County.

Drilling down to SC from the EPA’s Superfund Sites page you can see that 4 locations are currently on the list for the Greenville area. Fortunately, they are all in good standing based on the latest EPA report.

The 4 Greenville locations on the EPA’s Superfund list are:
CAROLINA PLATING WORKS INC.
ROY METAL FINISHING CO. INC.
STEEL HEDDLE MANUFACTURING CO.
T&S BRASS & BRONZE WORKS INC.

The metal working industry has to be on the lookout for heavy metals seepage into our underground water system, so it’s good to know the EPA is on their toes about regulating it.

A Superfund site is an uncontrolled or abandoned place where hazardous waste is located, possibly affecting local ecosystems or people.
