The BMW Charity Pro-Am has been named the 2009 Nationwide Tour Charity of the Year for its far-reaching impact on charities in the Upstate region of South Carolina and Western North Carolina.
Tournament organizers will receive a check for $30,000 from the PGA TOUR to enhance the tournament’s charitable endeavors.
Earlier, the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation announced it had raised $651,829 for 78 organizations as a result of last year’s tournament.
The next BMW Charity Pro-Am in Greer, S.C. is May 10-16 for a purse of $600,000.
One the same day that news breaks of BMW starting up Mid East exports of their SC manufactured vehicles, we also learn that Darley America, the U.S. arm of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Thoroughbred racing empire, has expanded its presence in Aiken, SC with the purchase of 360 acres in Montmorenci.
“The service is expected to load more than 5,000 vehicles annually that Hoegh previously moved across a competing South Atlantic port.”
– Jim Newsome, SPA Pres. & CEO
Of course it’s merely coincidental, but the important thing here to remember is that both bits of information could prove financially advantageous to S.C. in a big way going forward.
The U.S. Department of Transportation today proposed a new, consumer-friendly replacement tire label which would include, for the first time, information about the tire’s impact on fuel economy and CO2 emission reductions. Tires with lower rolling resistance – and proper inflation pressure – can contribute to improved fuel economy.
“Our proposal would let consumers look at a single label and compare a tire’s overall performance as it relates to fuel economy, safety and durability.” – U.S. Trans. Sec. Ray LaHood.
In addition to the new fuel efficiency ratings, the proposal by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also would provide consumers with two other key pieces of tire performance information – wet weather traction and tread wear. All three ratings would be prominently displayed on a removable label attached to the replacement tire at the point of sale.
The new system, which is nearing completion, will include two new highly-efficient gas turbine generators capable of producing 11,000 kilowatts (kW) of electricity.
These two new co-generation turbines will replace four older, less-efficient turbines, and have the capability to increase electrical output from 14% up to almost 30% of the plant’s current electrical demand.
“Using methane gas to power our plant is one example of our focus on environmentally-friendly production processes.” – President of BMW Manufacturing,
Josef Kerscher.
Additional Facts:
- To date, over 60% of the plant’s total energy requirements are provided by landfill gas.
- BMW’s landfill project is the only project that co-generates electricity and hot water for use at an industrial location remote from the landfill.
