South Carolina Drought Does Have Advantages

It’d be hard to think right off-hand exactly what the advantages to a drought would be, but certain plants thrive on drought conditions in order to regerminate their species - two of them being cypress and tupelo.

Gov. Sanford is hoping for a break in the drought, but we should remember that this is all part of the grand design, and things will work out in the long run.

While that may not be of much comfort to many right now, we will make it through this drought like we have with so many before it.

Lower Upstate Water Levels Mean More Fires

Upstate residents have done a good job of cutting back on water usage since the voluntary request was issued,SC State map of counties in a drought status in '08 but the SC Drought Response Committee says more steps need to be taken now to avoid a true crisis later:

  1. Water systems, businesses and individuals in the extreme drought counties should implement aggressive conservation measures,
  2. Water systems need to immediately contact the DHEC and DNR if they anticipate water supply problems, and
  3. Water systems should notify the DNR Drought Information Center regarding the success of their conservation actions.

Although not close to California’s scale, because of the drought we’re in right now, South Carolina’s lack of water has increased fires 19.5% over our 5 year average.
