SC Unemployment Insurance 4th Worst In Country

As of Sept. 30th, 5 states have reserves covering only 3 months or less of their average monthly unemployment insurance payments:SC's Unemployment Rate

  1. Michigan,
  2. Indiana,
  3. New York,
  4. South Carolina, and
  5. Ohio

South Carolina is “expected to borrow from the federal government in the first quarter of 2009″ to fund our unemployment fund, according to the National Employment Law Project, a move that certainly doesn’t bode well when our SC officials are entering the national GOP rankings since it will put us more in debt than we already are.Greenville's Unemployment Rate

On a side note, with New York ranking 3rd worst in the nation for unemployment, if Caroline Kennedy takes the NY Senate seat, it will be interesting to see if her family name has any pull in fixing their unemployment standings, especially since NY’s Gov. Patterson & the much-hyped mayor Bloomberg apparently haven’t done much in that department (Bloomberg now says “she can do anything.

Greenville County, SC Makes Forbes Top 5 List

Even after reading that Greenville County employment numbers are the 4th best in SC, it was still a welcome surprise to learn that “Greenville County, SC boasts enviable job growth figures” according to the Forbes’ article, “Affordable Places To Weather The Downturn.”

We round out their list of the top five spots to live in affordably during an economic downturn.

Here are some figures they’ve rounded up about Greenville County:

  • Affordability: 150.23
  • Median property tax: $984
  • Job growth: .9%
  • Per capita income (in 2006 inflation-adjusted dollars): $23,926
