South Carolina ‘I Believe’ License Plates Go Before Judge
“I am available to talk about the separation of church and state” - Lt. Gov. Bauer
Lt. Gov. Bauer is leading an effort to have South Carolina’s “I Believe” license plate the first in the nation to mix religious views with taxpayer’s money for their license plates.
In the Lt. Governor’s mind, our right to Separation of Church and State is not being violated.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State is suing to keep the state Department of Motor Vehicles from issuing plates that depict a stained-glass window with a cross and carrying the words “I Believe.” The Summers v. Adams lawsuit charges that the Christian plate gives preferential government treatment to one faith in violation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
* UPDATE 12/12/08: Judge halts ‘I Believe’ plates - They amount to state-sponsored religious preference, he rules.
